Howrah Government, Railway Police District was raised on 7th March’1950 under Notification No. 647 PL dated 7th March’ 1950. Howrah GRP consist most number of A-1 and A category stations such as Howrah, Burdwan, Durgapur, Asansol, are commonly known. Eastern Railway operates the oldest train “Kalka Mail” of Indian Railways which is of age 150 years, originates and terminates from and at Howrah Railway Station. Railway track under this GRP is extended approximate 1221.12 Railway Kilometre.

The whole of Howrah Division, Asansol Division and a substantial extent of Malda  Division ( all under Eastern Railway). Head Quarter, Asansol and DEB. Howrah Railway Station is the gateway of Eastern India.

There is great importance of this district as one side It covers the Industrial and Coal mines area of Bengal like Durgapur, Asansol,  on the other side the area of glimpse of Bengal as well as India like Belur Math, Dakshineswar, Tarakeswar, Santiniketan, Tarapith, Farakka, Nabadwip Dham, the historical place like Karna-Subarna.

This GRP covers  enormous area of Suburban trains like Howrah- Burdwan via Chord and Main, Howrah-Katwa, Howrah- Bandel, Bandel- Naihati, Dankuni - Dealdah via Bally - Dakshineswar, Howrah- Arambag via Sheoraphuli -Tarakeswar, Burdwan - Katwa, Ahmedpur - Katwa, Burdwan-Dumka via Rampuhat - Sainthia.  

Howrah GRP district encompasses the following Police Commissionerate namely Howrah Police Commissionerate, Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, Asansol–Durgapur Police Commissionerate and Barrackpore Police Commissionerate along with Police Districts namely Howrah Rural,  Hooghly Rural, Purba Burdwan, Paschim Burdwan, Birbhum, Jangipur, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, Nadia. 

This GRP District comprises of 13 Police Station; 23 GRPPs; 10 RPICs and 2 Police Camp under respective Police Station which are all functioning. Among these Police Stations 2(two) are under the Charge of one Inspector respectively Howrah and Asansol. While rest 11(eleven) are under the Charge of one SI for each of the PS i.e. Belur; Sheoraphulli; Kamarkundu; Bandel; Burdwan; Andal; Suri; Sainthia; Azimganj; Katwa and Kalna. The District also has got a Sanction Strength of 3(three) IRP Circles i.e. Bandel; Andal and Katwa. 3(three) DySRPs zone i.e. Head Quarter; Asansol and DEB zone.
